An introduction to the town of Biggar

Biggar is a tranquil town in the scenic Clyde Valley, a town with a rich and varied history.
The roots of the burgh date back for many centuries, in fact historians suggest that Biggar Common was inhabited in the Stone Age. It is an excellent tourist base, being as close to Edinburgh as it is to Glasgow. Biggar and its visitor attractions have many awards, including Best Tourist Town In Scotland, Scotland In Bloom, and individual awards to its museums.

In 1164, Biggar Church, dedicated to Mary of the Assumption, was built in stone on a site just to the north of the centre of the town, replacing a much earlier wooden chapel. It was in turn replaced by the current Biggar Kirk in 1546, the last Catholic Collegiate Church built before the Reformation.

The picturesque country town of Biggar is home to many small, interesting museums and is an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating and scenic area of Scotland.
